The Essentials of Healthy Newborn Sleep

Follow the ABCDs of Safe Sleep

The American Academy of Pediatrics and Johns Hopkins Medicine remind parents that the safest place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface designed for infants, with no incline. Remember these ABCDs every time you lay your baby down:

  • A is for Alone: Babies should sleep alone in their crib or bassinet. Keep soft items like pillows, blankets, stuffed animals and crib bumpers out of the sleep space.
  • B is for Back: Always place your baby on their back to sleep, both at naps and bedtime. Research shows this position reduces the risk of sleep‑related infant deaths.
  • C is for Crib (or bassinet): Use a firm, flat sleep surface that meets Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. Avoid inclined sleepers, adult beds, couches or car seats for routine sleep.
  • D is for Don’t smoke: Keep cigarette smoke, vaping and all nicotine away from your baby’s sleeping area. Exposure to smoke increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Additional recommendations include room‑sharing without bed‑sharing (keep baby in your room but not in your bed for at least six months) and dressing your baby in a wearable blanket or sleep sack instead of loose blankets to prevent overheating. If you choose to swaddle, stop once your baby shows signs of rolling over.

Feedings & Sleep: How They Interact

Feeding and sleep are closely intertwined in the first year. Newborn stomachs are tiny, which means they need to eat frequently and may only sleep in short bursts. Here’s how to navigate the relationship:

  • During the newborn phase, your baby’s primary need is nourishment. A satiated baby tends to sleep better. Don’t worry about “bad habits” at this stage—responding to your baby’s hunger cues helps them feel secure.
  • Watch for cues: Learning to distinguish your baby’s cries (hunger vs. fatigue vs. discomfort) will help you decide whether to feed or soothe.
  • Establish a flexible routine: As your baby grows and stomach capacity increases, you can start to create predictable wake times and bedtimes.
  • For toddlers, a consistent schedule and clear boundaries around mealtimes and sleep reduce tantrums and support healthy eating and sleep habits.

Creating a Sleep‑Friendly Environment

The foundation of great sleep is the sleep environment. Beyond following safe sleep guidelines, pay attention to:

Mattress & Bedding Quality

Parents are increasingly interested in what’s inside their children’s mattresses. A recent trend shows families asking about breathable, non‑toxic materials and third‑party certifications when choosing crib and kids’ mattresses. Look for mattresses that carry certifications such as GOTS‑certified organic, GREENGUARD Gold or MADE SAFE®, which indicate low emissions and safe materials. A firm, well‑fitting mattress reduces suffocation risks, and breathable fabrics help regulate your baby’s temperature.

Lighting & Sound

Keep the room dark during nighttime sleep. Blackout shades help tremendously. White‑noise machines can mimic the sounds of the womb and block household noise. Ensure the volume is low enough that it won’t damage your baby’s hearing (less than 50 decibels and 7 feet from baby).

Safe Swaddling & Sleepwear

Lightweight, breathable sleep sacks or wearable blankets are safer than loose blankets. If you swaddle, ensure it’s snug but not too tight and discontinue swaddling once your baby attempts to roll over. Dress your baby in layers appropriate for the room temperature to prevent overheating.

Pacifiers

Offering a pacifier at naps and bedtime may reduce the risk of SIDS. If you’re breastfeeding, wait until your baby’s latch is well established before introducing a pacifier. Attach the pacifier to your baby only when sleeping and never use strings or clips that could pose a strangulation hazard.

Building Healthy Sleep Routines

  • Establish a consistent bedtime: Start a relaxing bedtime routine (bath, feeding, lullaby) at the same time each night. Routines help signal to your baby that sleep is coming.
  • Use an “eat, play, sleep” rhythm: During the day, feed your baby, engage in age‑appropriate play (tummy time, singing) and then place them down drowsy but awake. This helps babies learn to fall asleep independently.
  • Create a calming environment: Use soft lighting, gentle songs and consistent cues. Avoid screen exposure around your baby before bedtime; screens can disrupt your baby’s natural sleep hormones.
  • Be flexible: Growth spurts, illness and milestones (like rolling or crawling) can temporarily disrupt sleep. Respond to your baby’s needs and re‑establish routines when the developmental leap passes.
  • Set realistic expectations: Many babies still wake during the night for feedings throughout the first year. Gradual night‑weaning and gentle sleep coaching methods can help lengthen stretches of sleep when you and your baby are ready.
