💘 A Quick Look Back – Why Do We Celebrate Valentine’s Day?
Before exploring all the local fun for 2026, it helps to know why February 14 became a day of love.
Ancient Romans celebrated Lupercalia, a mid-February fertility festival involving rituals meant to promote health and fertility. In the late 5th century, Pope Gelasius I banned Lupercalia and designated February 14 as St. Valentine’s Day. One legend says Saint Valentine was a priest who secretly married couples after marriage was banned for young soldiers; he was eventually executed and is said to have signed letters, “From your Valentine.”
The romantic association grew over time. In 1375, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote about birds choosing their mates on Valentine’s Day, and by the 1800s, mass-produced Valentine cards became popular.
